West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre 2014

As the most popular flagship programme of the West Kowloon Cultural District, the annual West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre will be greeting visitors again during the 2014 Lunar New Year of the Horse. The upcoming Bamboo Theatre will run for one month. Designed by renowned architect Mr. Raymond Fung and curated by Mr. Fredric Mao, this year’s Bamboo Theatre will feature an unprecedentedly strong cast from the Plum Blossom Award Art Troupe, alongside popular Cantonese opera performances, offering audiences a wide variety of viewing experiences. Meanwhile, the Rising Stars in Cantonese Opera Showcase will exhibit a strong line-up of emerging artists in local Cantonese Opera. In addition to stage performances, free movies featuring various forms of xiqu will also be screened at the Bamboo Theatre this year.

Due to the construction of the Xiqu Centre, which began in September 2013, this year's Bamboo Theatre will be held at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. Please come and immerse yourself in the Bamboo Theatre with its stunning harbour night view, and enjoy the spectacular programme of performances by acclaimed masters and emerging artists.

West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre

Since 2012, a temporary bamboo theatre has been set up during the Chinese New Year period on the future site of the Xiqu Centre. In just three weeks, ten craftsmen would turn thousands of bamboo poles into an 800-seat theatre for xiqu performances and events. Combining traditional and contemporary features in both architectural design and programme selection, the Bamboo Theatre is dedicated to bringing the West Kowloon Cultural District and the Xiqu Centre’s vision of fostering a new cultural atmosphere for Hong Kong to life.
