Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City

Active mainly in southern Fujian and the area around Jinjiang, the Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City has a history dating back to 1931. The first performing arts group from mainland China to perform in Kinmen, Taiwan, the troupe has also performed in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Macau.

The acclaimed troupe has nurtured a number of award-winning talents, including Wu Jingjing, National Class One Performer and winner of the Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre, and Ji Yafu and Chen Bingcong, representatives of Gaojia opera as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of China at National Level. Its repertoire includes classics such as Wu Han Kills His Wife, The Closet as Matchmaker and Meng Lijun, as well as the original productions Heroes of the Golden Broadsword, Shangguan Wan’er and Sister A Da. In 1999, the troupe performed Heroes of the Golden Broadsword at a Beijing performance gala in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. In 2003, its new historical production Shangguan Wan’er won a number of awards at the China Theatre Festival, including a prized Cao Yu Repertory Award.

Zeng Xuewan is a National Class One Playwright and the director of the Xiamen Taiwan Art Research Institute. A prominent cultural figure in Fujian, he is recognised by the national “Ten Thousand Talents Programme” as a leading expert in social sciences and is a recipient of the State Council’s special grant. His works have garnered top accolades including three China Theatre Awards and four Wenhua Awards from China’s Ministry of Culture.

Chen Dalian is a National Class One Director, and the vice president of the Fujian People’s Art Theatre. A graduate of the Directing Department at the Central Academy of Drama, he has independently directed over 40 theatre productions across various genres, including stage plays, Western operas and productions of Peking opera and other regional xiqu genres. The recipient of multiple national awards, Chen is a prominent cultural figure in Fujian and recognised as an “Outstanding Expert” by China’s Ministry of Culture.

Zhu Weijie is an award-winning National Class One Composer. He formerly served as the director of the Xiamen Gezi Opera Troupe and is currently a member of a government art committee in Fujian.

Huang Yongying
Huang Yongying is a National Class One Stage Designer, former director of the Xiamen Taiwan Art Research Institute and current honorary president of the Fujian Institute of Stage Design. In 2013, he was named “Person of the Year” by the China Institute of Stage Design. He is the recipient of a number of national awards, including the Wenhua Grand Award, the Wenhua Stage Design Award, and the China Theatre Festival Excellent Production and Excellent Stage Design Awards.

Acclaimed veteran actor Wu Jingjing is the director of the Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City and a National Class One Performer. Recognised as a Representative Bearer of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by China’s Ministry of Culture, she is a prominent cultural figure in Fujian. Wu is a renowned performer, and the recipient of the prestigious Plum Blossom Award and a two-time winner of the China Theatre Festival Excellent Performance Award.

Chen Bingcong is a National Class One Performer and the deputy director of the Jin Liansheng Gaojia Opera Troupe of Xiamen City. A specialist in Gaojia chou (comic) and wusheng (male martial arts) roles. Chen has been recognised with a number of awards, including Excellent Director and Excellent Performance Awards from the Fujian Theatre Association, and a Chinese Theatre Festival Excellent Director Award. He has been named a Representative Bearer of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by China’s Ministry of Culture and currently serves as the vice president of the Xiamen Dramatists Association.

Wu Boxiang
Wu Boxiang is a National Class Two Performer. He has played major roles in productions such as Tua-Tiu-Tiann, Xu Jiujing Gets Promoted and The Prison Superintendent, and is also an up-and-coming theatre director. Recognised by the Xiamen government as a “Young Innovative Mind”, he has received a number of provincial awards for his performances.
