Loved by audiences around the world, jazz encompasses a wide range of styles, from New Orleans Dixieland to bebop, from experimental avant-garde to lounge. But how much do you know about its roots and history, or its influence on popular music in Hong Kong?

In this series of four online talks, Henry and Roger Chung – songwriting and performance duo The Chung Brothers – look at the evolution of jazz in the US and its development in Hong Kong. The first talk offers an introduction to the origins of jazz in New Orleans and insight on how its popularity grew with Hong Kong audiences – from Shanghai jazz singers, to Louis Armstrong’s 1963 performance at the opening of the Hong Kong City Hall to today’s contemporary scene. The remaining three talks explore key time periods in jazz history, moving from early jazz and its roots in the blues, to the bebop styles of the 1940s and 1950s, and the improvisational modal jazz made popular by musicians like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. All talks are supplemented with video and audio clips.

The talks will be conducted through Microsoft Teams. Registered participants will receive a streaming link for each talk with their confirmation email.
