Cantonese opera features a rich variety of musical elements. With the help of live demonstrations and audio materials, this talk looks at:

  1. The vocal styles used by actors playing male and female roles;
  2. How lyrics in a tonal language like Cantonese are set to the melodies;
  3. The “melo-rhythmic” vocal forms (melodies with a strong rhythmic inflection) and programmatic tunes (tunes that render an extra-musical mood or narrative);
  4. The musical characteristics of speech forms;
  5. The main melodic and percussion instruments in the accompaniment;
  6. How vocalists and instrumentalists work together.
