Our past experiences shape our perspective on people and the world around us, but how does this apply to gender and performances?
In this talk, Indonesian dance artist Rianto, a master of the cross-gender form of the traditional dance Lengger, shares how his training and cultural background have helped him develop a unique dance vocabulary that embodies gender fluidity. Looking at gender fluidity in traditional Indonesian dance forms and the recognition of multiple genders in Indonesian cultural practices, he also discusses gendered space within the Indonesian social and political climate and ‘body migration’ – the journey of the body through shifting cultural practices, and how ideas and reflections can be manifested through dance. The session includes live demonstrations.

Rianto founded the classical Javanese dance company, Dewandaru Dance Company in Tokyo in 2003. He has worked with a spectrum of international choreographers, performance makers and companies while remaining dedicated to finding his own voice for contemporary Javanese performing arts.
