Thematic Talk: The Practical and Experimental Nature of Theatre Architecture

How can a practical theatre space become experimental? What is a practical theatre space? How can we balance the design of a theatre with the practical requirements of stage technology? This talk explores the relationship between experimental and practical considerations by looking at examples of theatres in Tokyo.

Thematic Talk: The Technical Design of Freespace

Freespace is one of the venues of the West Kowloon Cultural District scheduled to open in 2019. It includes a flexible black box theatre that can accommodate 450 people seated or 900 standing. How is the technical design of this space like? How would it answer the various creative and technical needs of different cross-disciplinary programmes?

Guided Tours for Secondary School and Workshops: Freespace Tech Lab Workshop*

The tours and workshops will take place in a performance space surrounded by four mirror walls, and students will be guided by professional stage technicians in the following activities:

  • Watch a technical demonstration of a multi-media theatre in a specially designed space
  • Take a walk-through of theatre facilities, including backstage, control room and the rigging system
  • Get to know the different components of stage technology and their applications, including the operation of the lighting system, sound system, and rigging system
  • Try their hand at operating the abovementioned components of stage technology, individually and in combination

Technology is the basis of art, and all changes in art are related to technologies – from theatre architecture to technical applications on stage, every single technical aspect could affect the performance, as well as the relationships between the performance and the performers. This series of workshops and training programmes will offer tertiary students and young people an overview of the basic concepts of theatre architecture and stage technology.
