The Stage Movements of Cantonese Opera
CityU SCOPE Admiralty Learning Centre , 23.10.2018
The technical demands of Cantonese opera require that performers achieve expert skills in five different stage arts: singing, acting, recital, martial arts and dance. This talk, by experienced Cantonese opera researcher and performer Xie Xiao-yu, looks specifically at the skills collectively known as stage movement – acting, martial arts and dance – and examines the formulaic gestures used to convey meaning through the body and through facial expressions. Using videos and live demonstrations, Xie Xiao-yu explores the use of stage movement patterns and the specific movements used in different roles, and looks at how acting, martial arts and dancing are combined to convey the unfolding of plot.
