The Stories Behind the Xiqu Centre

The Xiqu Centre is the first performing arts venue of the West Kowloon Cultural District. With a lantern-like design that integrates the core elements of traditional Chinese architecture, the eight-storey venue includes the Grand Theatre, the Tea House Theatre, eight studios, a seminar hall and a large public atrium.
In this talk, Louis Yu, Executive Director of Performing Arts at West Kowloon, shares stories about the design of the building, its unusual use of space, the venue positioning and the Xiqu Centre’s relationship with local Cantonese opera communities.

About Speaker:
Louis Yu joined the West Kowloon Cultural District as Executive Director of Performing Arts in June 2010. He is responsible for steering the planning and development of the performing arts facilities in the district, and for overseeing the strategies and operating models for these facilities. Since joining West Kowloon, Louis Yu has played a pivotal role in leading the design and construction of the performing arts facilities. He has also overseen a series of pre-opening programmes for dance, drama and theatre arts, music and xiqu.
Louis Yu has around 30 years of experience in arts administration and management. Formerly the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, he also worked with the Hong Kong Arts Centre for 13 years and served as the Executive Director from 2000 to 2007.
