SEA STATE: Drift (Rope Sketch)
2012, Single-channel HD digital video, 4 min 59 sec
SEA STATE: Drift (Rope Sketch) is part of Charles Lim’s ongoing SEA STATE series, which uses drawings, sculptural installations and videos to reflect upon the increasingly ambiguous connection between Singapore and its surrounding waters. In this video, a thin white rope is stretched above a body of water. As the camera slowly pans out, it comes to light that the rope is in fact floating on the sea coast, free from any form of metaphorical ties. The work examines the fluid maritime border between Singapore and Malaysia, as well as the role of land reclamation in shaping the geographical territory of the island city state.
