In Beyond Geography, Li Ran embarks on a staged expedition through an imaginary jungle where he encounters strange plants and a remote tribe. Shot inside an empty film lot, this pseudo-documentary/performance mirrors programmes produced by popular television outlets, such as the Discovery Channel, in which male explorers from the ‘West’ are often seen trekking across exotic lands in search of foreign natives. Li’s dramatic expression and voice-over, as well as his humorous interaction with the fictional tribe, question the authenticity of popular media while also revealing the discrepancy between real and fictive perceptions of the ‘other’.
