Frozen (1996)
95 min, Mandarin with English subtitles, 35mm, China
In the early 1990s, the artist Qi Lei planned a four-part performance, named after the solstices and equinoxes, on the subjects of death and burial. After the first three performances won attention from media and colleagues, Qi decided to use his body to melt a massive block of ice during the summer solstice.
Wang Xiaoshuai (Chinese, born 1966) is a director living in Beijing. His work takes the rapid urbanisation of China as its background and depicts the material and theoretical predicaments individuals face in everyday life.
