Proceedings: Four Iterations of Hong Kong in Venice
Shirley Tse: Stakeholders, Hong Kong in Venice marks nearly two decades of Hong Kong’s participation in La Biennale di Venezia (also known as the Venice Biennale), as well as the fourth edition that M+, West Kowloon Cultural District, has curated and co-presented with the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. This is an opportunity for critical reflection on the representation of Hong Kong contemporary art internationally in recent years. Together, curators and artists from the last four editions of the Biennale discuss the artistic approaches, curatorial strategies, and challenges of the biennial format by considering past and present iterations of Hong Kong’s exhibition in Venice and also the future of the contemporary art scene in Hong Kong and its standing in the world.

About the speakers
Doryun Chong is Deputy Director, Curatorial, and Chief Curator of M+. He oversees all curatorial activities and programmes, including acquisitions, exhibitions, learning and public programmes, and digital initiatives. M+ exhibitions he has curated or co-curated include Mobile M+: Live Art (2015), Noguchi for Danh Vo: Counterpoint (2018), and three editions of the Hong Kong exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia (2015, 2017, and 2019).
Stella Fong is Lead Curator, Learning and Interpretation at M+. She joined M+ in 2011 and has led learning initiatives and programmes aimed at shaping practices of non-formal learning through collaborative, experimental, and research-based pedagogy. She co-curated the solo exhibition of Tsang Kin-Wah for Hong Kong’s participation at La Biennale di Venezia in 2015.
Christina Li is a curator working between Hong Kong and Amsterdam. She graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a degree in Fine Arts (Art History) and Comparative Literature, and completed De Appel Curatorial Programme in 2009. She was the Curator-at-Large at Spring Workshop, Hong Kong, where she served as the Director between 2015 and 2017. At Spring, she curated, among other projects, A Collective Present (2017), Wu Tsang: Duilian (2016), Wong Wai Yin: Without Trying (2016), Days push off into nights (2015), and Des hôtes: a foreigner, a human, an unexpected visitor (2015). She curated Dismantling the Scaffold (2018), the inaugural exhibition at Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong.
Yung Ma is Curator in the Department of Contemporary and Prospective Creation at the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, in Paris, a role that was created in collaboration with the K11 Art Foundation. Formerly Associate Curator, Moving Image, at M+, he was co-curator of the Hong Kong exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia in 2009 and 2013.
Los Angeles–based Hong Kong artist Shirley Tse works in the media of sculpture, installation, photography, and text. She at once deconstructs the world of synthetic objects that carry paradoxical meanings and constructs models in which differences might come together. To visualise heterogeneity, Tse conflates different scales, fuses the organic with the industrial, moves between the literal and the metaphorical, merges narratives, and collapses the subject and object relationship.
Multidisciplinary artist Samson Young was trained as a composer and works between image and sound to examine cross-cultural encounters of the past, present, and future—and their reverberations. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, where he represented Hong Kong; Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago; and elsewhere.
About the moderator
John Tain is Head of Research at Asia Art Archive. His writings have appeared in Artforum, Art Review Asia, and elsewhere, and he is an editor for Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series. Previously, he was a curator at the Getty Research Institute, where he curated an exhibition for Pacific Standard Time. In 2018, he co-curated Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Someday, Chicago as part of Art Design Chicago initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
