West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) will present two programmes, namely Decade and Take A Swing, to push further the possibilities of staging experimental and cross-disciplinary productions beyond the constraints of a traditional performance venue, leading up to the commissioning of Freespace within the Park at the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Decade and Take A Swing are not limited to a single event in which the public have fun but will give them a rare platform to practice imagining various artistic ideas that go beyond anything they experienced in the past,” said Mr Louis Yu, Executive Director, Performing Arts of WKCDA. “We will also take these opportunities to experiment how to use the open space in WKCD Park and its unconventional performance facility Freespace, which is scheduled for completion in 2016.”

Presented and produced by WKCDA and co-curated by Fieldwork Productions and the Hong Kong Film Archive, an interactive online platform Decade (www.yourdecade.hk) was launched today (7 July).

This digital art project features ten 5-minute historical films which are paired with ten new soundtracks of solo Chinese and Western instrumental scores composed and performed by ten local musicians from different musical backgrounds. Each audio-visual piece represents a decade in the life of Hong Kong, taking audience on a fascinating cinematic and musical journey into the past century - from 1898 when Thomas Edison took the first moving image of Hong Kong to the modern day - through the eyes of the filmmakers and curators.

The online platform also comes with an interactive installation for audience to create their own digital art piece, at any time and place, by simply rearranging the film clips and music accompaniments.

Decade, one of our pre-opening projects, is an exciting collaborative effort among the curators, musicians and the public to open up new possibilities for creative exchanges and art making,” Mr LOW Kee Hong, Head, Artistic Development (Theatre) of WKCDA, said. “Everyone is welcome to create a unique version of Decade to express his/her interpretation of Hong Kong’s history and share it with others online.”

Decade has made its debut public performance in Freespace Fest in December 2013 and received wide acclaim from audiences.

Co-curating the project, Conor Roche, Director of Fieldwork Productions, said, “The project was devised to exist in multiple formats, with the online interactive installation version launched today being the main home for the project.”

“As the curator responsible for the selection and production of the visual images, particular efforts were made to source the most representative images of each decade, to cover not only the city texture and landscapes, but also the overall sentiment of the populace at their respective time and space,” said Winnie Fu, programmer of the Hong Kong Film Archive.

Steve Hui, Music Director of Decade, said that image-music interaction empowered the breaking of boundaries. “I believe the ten musicians all have their own memories and feelings towards the imageries of Hong Kong's past. Music gives us new eyes to view images and images enable us to enjoy music by unconventional means,” he added.

Apart from this online project, WKCDA will present Hong Kong’s first free outdoor live music and street dance programme, Take A Swing that features a jam of live funk and neo soul music and street dance at the Yau Ma Tei Community Centre Rest Garden on 26 July. The event will also transform the park into a Cantonese Disco Party with DJ mix featuring Hong Kong’s best 70s, 80s and 90s Cantopop.

Guest-curated by Hongboy@Rhythm Attack, in partnership with the band leader Teriver Cheung and DJ Shelf-Index, Take A Swing is the second programme of the Freespace Series that acts as a laboratory to test out cross-disciplinary performing arts projects for future Freespace Fest.

“We hope to explore the relationship between contemporary performing arts and public spaces outside the WKCD, and bring an interesting collaboration between musicians, DJs and street dancers to growing audiences in the community,” Mr Low added. “It will be an evening of energetic street performances guaranteed to charm audience of all ages.”
