Ant Hampton: Someone Else (Hong Kong Version)
28.02.2016 to 29.03.2016
HELLO
I'M SORRY IF THIS SEEMS STRANGE,
BUT I'M TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION
WITH SOMEONE I WOULDN'T NORMALLY GET TO SPEAK WITH.
Theatremaker Ant Hampton (UK) is known for his ‘Autoteatro’ work in which audience members become performers – in pairs, or groups, or individually – by following a pre-recorded set of instructions. Someone Else moves Autoteatro a step further, towards something truly consequential.
In Someone Else, the audience become the performers in a multi-part structured encounter that mixes sincerity, confession and humour, asking you to move out of the ‘theatre’ space and contemplate approaching a stranger somewhere in the city. It is a truly unique experience that begins with a 45 minute audio encounter and continuing on the next day or two and perhaps even beyond. Diverse media – scraps of paper, highly realistic 'binaural' audio and the largest text display in Hong Kong – edge you delicately towards a radical kind of social imagination, a quiet revolution almost.
Functioning both at the level of a dare and as a springboard for a potentially transformative experience, Someone Else poses the question: What might result from a deliberate breaking-out of your usual circles?
In the initial part of the encounter, you assemble on the roof of the "project site office" of West Kowloon Cultural District. Wearing headphones, and with the city spread out in a panorama, you listen to a proposal contemplated in different ways. The second part continues in the city, later, and at a location of your choosing.
Someone Else won the award for 'Best Immersive Non-Fiction' at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) 2015.
