How did Cantonese Opera evolve from the ritual performance and popular entertainment to a theatrical art in Hong Kong and Chinese communities around the world? How did the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua carve out its path of constant renewal and create the new ‘urban Yueju’? How can these two xiqu genres win the heart of the Chinese community today? In this seminar, two artists of xiqu from Mainland China and Hong Kong: Mao Weitao and Liza Wang, will take a retrospective look at the art form and discuss how xiqu can connect with the modern city life.
