Freespace Micro - Compartmentalized
Carving Space with Funk and Finesse

Background
Compartmentalized is an energetic outdoor dance performance presented by West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (HK) in association with Stalker Theatre (AUS) and Unlock Dancing Plaza (HK) with the support of City of Sydney and the Australia-China Council.

As a West Kowloon Cultural District Authority’s (WKCDA) performing arts initiative, Compartmentalized has the objective of incubating international cross-disciplinary new pieces that break the boundaries of presentation, style and mode of partnerships. Matching the wit and physical prowess of Stalker Theatre, WKCDA invited Unlock Dancing Plaza to join this ground-breaking collaboration. With the support from the City of Sydney and the Australia-China Council, the premiere of Compartmentalized was presented in Sydney, Australia in January 2014.

About the work
Striking strategic balance between dexterous skills and witty details, Compartmentalized blends contemporary choreography’s fluid aesthetics with street dance’s direct engagement with the cityscape; every passing second urges audiences to anticipate for the next surprise. Employing the universal language of dance and a contagious soundscape made of live percussions and field recordings of Hong Kong’s streets, the 18-minute piece lends a theatrical twist to familiar actions of frantic cities like taking the train, crossing the road, or squeezing into a crowded elevator. Compartmentalized is about life in the city; its unrelenting pace, its segmented space, and the urge for people to break through confining walls for self expression and interaction.
