This summer, West Kowloon’s performing arts department teams up with Edward Lam Dance Theatre to launch the Theatre Atelier Project – a six-month training programme for young creative producers and administrators covering all aspects of theatre production and administration, including creative work, production, sales and marketing, digital promotion, and design.
The programme is designed for recent graduates or junior professionals with cultural management, humanities or arts experience, a passionate interest in the work of renowned playwright and director Edward Lam, and desire to gain hands-on experience in the performing arts industry.
About the Theatre Atelier Project
The process of making a piece of theatre is more than just the production per se. Discussions and considerations of aesthetics, philosophy and human psychology permeate through all aspects, including development, production and marketing. Very often, we forget that a ‘live’ theatre performance is about a gathering, a meeting of the artist and audiences through the medium of the work that needs a more holistic consideration when it comes to how a piece of theatre is created and thereafter communicated.
As we race toward the opening of our first venues in 2018, we at West Kowloon are interested to delve deeper into these questions and processes that take into consideration the comprehensive framework that creates a total engaging experience for our future audiences. With this aim, we are collaborating with Edward Lam Dance Theatre on the Theatre Atelier Project, a programme that will give us, and six young apprentices, a penetrating insight into the creative mind of one of today’s most popular and critically acclaimed directors in the Chinese theatre scene.
Between September 2016 and February 2017, Edward Lam will work closely with the six apprentices, giving them access to his particular approach to theatre making, including all public facing content related to a piece of work. This holistic and intimate training of young cultural workers will be a first for a major theatre company in Hong Kong, no doubt an important opportunity for growing future generations of aesthetically astute and sensitive creative producers. The project will also give West Kowloon important observations, learning points and recommendations that will help us look into new ways of facilitating creation, production, communication and distribution of artworks as well as the evolution of creative partnerships with the Hong Kong theatre sector in the near future.
