In the first half of the last century, a new form of music flourished in Hong Kong and southern China. Known as “spirited music”, the lively, offbeat style was rooted in Cantonese opera and traditional and ritual tunes, adopted influences from western jazz and was played on a mix of western and Chinese instruments. This concert, under the artistic direction of Sammi Yu, presents a selection of some of the most iconic works from that era and features vocal performances from renowned singers Pak Suet-mui and Guo Fengnu, and others.

Instrumental performances:
The Sound of Thunder During Drought, The Special Express, Dance Like the Dragon and the Phoenix, Pacing Horses, In Celebration of Good Times, The Purple Hairpin and more

Vocal performances:
A Wanderer’s Autumn Grief, Song of Lychee and more
