Public Forum: Shifting Paradigms of Contemporary Performance Art in Asia
Xavier Le Roy in conversation with contemporary artists

What do live performance practices in Asia look like today? How are artists and creators using their bodies as a primary medium to explore various forms of expression and movement as modes of communication across the wider visual culture landscape? M+ and West Kowloon’s Performing Arts team collaborate for the first time to give a public forum, aiming to uncover and define performativity in contemporary art in Asia by drawing on various interwoven connections of performance practices across the disciplines of visual art and dance.

During the forum, acclaimed artist Xavier Le Roy shares his experiences on investigating the representation of bodies and our relationship to time, our understanding of the dichotomy between object and subject, and the behaviours exhibited between performers and visitors. After the sharing, dance artist Scarlet Yu and performance artist River Lin join Le Roy for a conversation on how different modes of production are shaping performance practices in the region today. Through the lens of visual art, we consider the aspects of intention, provocation, and relationships derived from live art actions in the museum context, with each speaker discussing how their own performances in museum spaces affect their engagement with the audience, and in what ways they wish to create connections through the immediacy of their works.

As live gestures of the body are emerging across various artistic disciplines, these conversations consider how the boundaries between visual art, dance, music, theatre, and new media have become blurred, collapsing traditional distinctions and shifting the paradigms of contemporary performance practices within Asia’s visual culture landscape.
