In light of the current situation, Creation for Freespace: Exploring Experimental Music with Aki Onda on 21-22 February 2020 (Friday-Saturday) will be rescheduled. Details will be announced on the West Kowloon Cultural District website www.westkowloon.hk in due course. Programme Enquiries: michael.chan-es@wkcda.hk.

This February, Japanese avant-garde musician and visual artist Aki Onda brings his creative vision and rich experience in music and art making to Freespace with a series of events and workshops on music experimentation and improvisation. Known for his compositions and visual artworks created from field recordings saved on cassette tapes over the last three decades, Onda has presented his works at MoMA, the Louvre Museum and Sound Live Tokyo. He has collaborated with filmmakers, visual artists, musicians, and choreographers, including Ken Jacobs, Michael Snow and Takashi Makino.

The series features a two-day Workshop with Aki Onda, where participants explore theories of experimental music and improvisation, and engage in hands-on practice.

There is also a public Work-in-Progress Showcase, where Onda and local experimental musicians showcase works created during a professional exchange programme in February.

Workshop with Aki Onda

In this two-day workshop, Onda works with local musicians with an interest in creating experimental music and sound art to explore techniques of improvisation and experimentation.

The session offers an introduction to the development of experimental music in different regions with examples of work by a variety of sound artists. Working collaboratively, participants look at how to incorporate a variety of techniques, such as improvisation, extended instrumental technique, spatial sound and deep listening into existing music or art practices, and discuss how to conceptualise works within the framework of critical discourse for experimental music.
