The first Freespace Happening of 2016 takes place on 10 January, with an exciting musical line up and two great percussive events setting the beat for the new year – we dare you not to dance!

A tribal-inspired session by the four-piece Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra percussion ensemble will get you on your feet and shake off the chill of winter. With a strong Latin influence, two pieces by Brazilian Ney Rosauro and a magical piece for berimbau – a Brazilian single-string musical bow – the session sets a carnival mood and closes with a samba parade.

Shifting the rhythms from Latin America to Asia we have Danceless: Chu Sau Man (Taiko Drumming) x Ong Yong Lock– a powerful performance of Japanese taiko drums and contemporary local dance signifying the first collaboration between Virginia Chu Sau Man – noted artist and musician– and Ong Yong Lock, artistic director of Unlock Dancing Plaza.

For a taiko preview – and an idea of the full-body workout taiko-drumming involves – you can join one of the two pre-performance beginner’s workshop sessions and share basic stance and drumming techniques. Only limited spaces are available for this free workshop! Register 15 minutes before the workshop at the Sunset Lawn on the day.

Other musical treats will include a great mix of laid-back indie-singer songwriters, local rockers to popular names such as CC Cherry, Royal Blues, Pomegranate Tree, Esther LamLam, Tiffany Chan, The Sulis Club, 3Think and the New Youth Barbershop.

Complementing our regular handicraft market, we will also have a selection of hands-on workshops with a cultural theme. Ten Finger Workshop will hold three, tantalising food-inspired miniature modelling sessions, where you can learn how to make your own mini hawker cart complete with fishballs, shape mini baskets of tiny dim sum, or create a mini dim-sum necklace. And artist and illustrator Jinno Neko will show you how to turn paper and bamboo into a gorgeous Japanese Nebuta goldfish lantern.

Last but not least – Reading on the Grass returns! We have a great new pool of books in our Reading on the Grass Library for you to choose from – so remember to bring along books to swap. And if you don’t have anything to swap, just plan to spend some extra time on the lawn so you can dip into something that catches your eye while you’re here.
