August Gray

August Gray, whose real name is Ashley Johnston, is a 17-year old American Chinese singer songwriter. She writes songs of varying genres that can mainly be categorized as Indie Folk, with catchy melodies and earnest lyrics. Born in Hong Kong and living there until the age of eight, Ashley started learning guitar in the same year, and began songwriting soon after. After she moved back to Hong Kong from Los Angeles at 11, she began recording songs at home, teaching herself how to use recording software and posting songs on SoundCloud. Having been brought up listening to music ranging from Electronic Ambient House to frat-boy rock, today Ashley’s music taste is still very eclectic- she mainly listens to jazz, hip hop, and electro, but finds the most inspiration in Indie pop/rock.

In his songs, audience can expect bass driven beats and true to life lyrics; the perspective of an admittedly culture-confused kid who calls this city home by choice, not by birth. Inspirations are cited as Joey Bada$$, 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Mac Miller to name a few.

After a few months off gigging to focus on stepping his music up to a higher level, the dedicated emcee is here with a list of new tracks and a desire to make himself heard.
