The artist Shirley Tse will represent Hong Kong at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, in a site-specific solo exhibition curated by Guest Curator Christina Li. Over the past two decades, Tse has addressed the multiple meanings and possible interpretations of material things with an intricate, refined body of work. In her early career, she framed plastics as the prime signifier of globalisation through the mechanisms of circulation, standardisation, and industrialisation. Her recent work considers plastic as an adjective, and the resonance of plasticity, fluidity, movement, and multiplicity in contemporary society. Central to her work is the enigma that plastic—synthetic polymer—is essentially a formula without a fixed identity, yet it produces conflict and complex ethical debates.
In this talk, Tse discusses central concepts in her practice from the past twenty years. She is then joined in conversation by Christina Li, offering the audience a first glimpse of the Venice exhibition. This talk is the first in the series of public programmes organised around Hong Kong’s participation in the Venice Biennale, which invites thinkers and practitioners to share their experiences and readings of Tse’s practice.
