Producing good, creative new dance work, not only requires content but also a healthy production ecology. On the macro level, how can we nurture original, high quality dance? On the micro level, what are the limitations and challenges of Hong Kong’s current dance production ecology?
On 3 June, Louis Yu and Anna CY Chan from the West Kowloon Performing Arts Department join Ong Yong Lock from Unlock Dancing Plaza (Hong Kong), Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh from Le Phare, National Choreographic Center of Le Havre Normandy (France), art editor and critic Daisy Chu (Hong Kong), and professionals from the Hong Kong performing arts scene to share their thoughts and experience at the talk Hong Kong Production Ecology: “Simon Says” – A Case Study.
Part of a collaborative creation project facilitated by the West Kowloon Performing Arts Department that began in 2015, “Simon Says” is a co-production by Unlock Dancing Plaza from Hong Kong and Le Phare, National Choreographic Center of Le Havre Normandy from France. The production’s Asian premiere takes place during this year’s Le French May festival in Hong Kong.
Accompanying the performance, the talk brings together the facilitators of the production, Anna CY Chan, Ong Yong Lock and Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh with local performing arts critics, independent producers and representatives from medium- and small-scale performing arts organisations to discuss issues such as How to foster the development of a creation from an initial exchange? What are the difficulties encountered during the creation process and what type of coordination do these issues necessitate? and How to refine the creative work once it starts to take shape? Louis Yu and Daisy Chu will also look at the long- and short-term strengths and weaknesses of the Hong Kong dance production ecology from their perspectives as head of a cultural organisation and as an art critic, and share thoughts on the best ways to break down boundaries and explore new types of collaboration. Choreographers, dancers, art critics, producers, production crews, and art enthusiasts are welcome to join the event.
