Artists in Conversation: Performance and Social Change in Hong Kong

Can performance art effect social change? How do artists use the actions of live bodies to represent concerns in society, and can these creative expressions elicit solutions? In the current state of rapidly shifting global affairs, societal conditions seem more challenging than ever and artists are increasingly taking up the mantle as advocates to expose and attempt to remedy injustices.

We consider these issues in a public conversation with wen yau and Isaac Chong Wai, Hong Kong artists of different generations who use their performances to explore both personal and collective dilemmas in their communities. Each artist expands on their particular practice and discusses the intentions and motivations behind their works. Highlighting their commissions for M+ Live Art: Audience as Performer, as well as past performances, this conversation examines the idea of art as a cultural tool that connects people and communities to inspire and encourage social change.

Artist Workshop: Painting with Spice

Courtesy the artist

Join artist Tisna Sanjaya to discover how he transforms natural materials into unique paintings through actions and gestures of the body. In this artist-led workshop, you can learn new methods of art making by creating your own performance painting using aromatic spices from Hong Kong. Inspired by 99 Sajadah Merah, Sanjaya’s work presented in M+ Live Art: Audience as Performer, this is a unique opportunity to engage with the artist and understand more about his creative process and symbolic use of natural elements.

Sanjaya consistently uses his art to connect with local communities and hopes to do the same with audiences in Hong Kong. By inviting you to share your own thoughts and ideas in the workshop, the artist aims to encourage open communication and offer new perspectives on how art can lead to mutual understanding and stronger bonds in society. The workshop is open to all.
