As an extention to the 2019 commemorative talk series on Wong Yuet-sang – held to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth – the Xiqu Centre and the Centre for Chinese Music Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong present a new series of talks on the work of a man widely regarded as Hong Kong’s maestro of Cantonese music culture.
During his lifetime, Wong created over 200 songs and instrumental pieces for Cantonese opera. As an instructor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a great proponent of Cantonese opera, Wong also promoted the academic study of the art form and taught a number of students, many of whom are now artists in their own rights.

Wong Yuet-sang (1919-1989), born in Chongqing, Sichuan, moved to Hong Kong at 12. As a composer and a multi-instrumentalist, Wong has served as the band leader of a few leading Cantonese Opera troupes in Hong Kong. He was later invited by Sit Kok-sin to join his opera troupe in Guangzhou. Since the 1940s, Wong had worked closely with the playwright Tong Tik-sang. In 1950s, Wong composed over 150 songs, such as “Tears of the Red Candle “, “Beauties Budding from the Silvery Pond” and “Streaks of Tears”. He also arranged some ancient scores into Cantonese Opera. In his later years, Wong taught in the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong and Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His students include actors such as Law Yim-hing, Lam Ka-sing, Wan Fai-yin, and Nan Fung also studied the art from him.
