Performances of ritual opera are a traditional part of Chinese folk culture, and each ethnic group has its own performance genre, style and practice.

In this seminar, author and educator Choi Kai-kwong, artist Wen Ruqing, writer and researcher Huang Jianfeng and academic and author Zhan Shuanghui introduce different aspects of ritual opera performance culture and its associated intangible cultural heritage from Hong Kong, Guangdong, Chaoshan and Hailufeng.

The four talks – “An overview of bamboo theatre culture in Hong Kong”, “Cantonese opera performance in Guangdong and neighbouring regions”, “The evolution of Teochew opera folk culture”, and “Baizi opera – The treasure of the Hailufeng region” – are followed by exchange and discussions.
