Sugar painting is a traditional Chinese folk art often seen at temple fairs, markets and festive performances of Chinese opera. Using melted sugar, artists create all kinds of fragile, glistening images, including auspicious animals, Chinese zodiac signs and historical and fictional characters from Chinese opera.
In this two-hour workshop, sugar painting artist Ko Hiu-ming introduces the history and basic techniques of sugar painting, and leads participants to create three works.

Please note: Participants must join in pairs. Suitable for participants aged 7 and above, registered participants aged 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Each pair of participants will receive one set of materials only. Please register online in advance.

About the Tutor:
Traditional Chinese sugar painting artist Ko Hiu-ming began learning his trade in 2008 from the master Han Pingan in northern China. In 2017, Ko became the last apprentice of sugar painting master Luo Jau-ying, a master of the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Tianmen Sugar Sculpture, whose skills were passed down through his family. Today, Ko works to preserve and share the knowledge of this traditional craft.
