Performance: So Low

Photo: Eric
The premiere of this production was presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

I am shoved, squeezed and shifted -
I keep searching for a refuge on the time-space slide
Does it really exist, this existence under siege?
Awarded Outstanding Choreography in the 20th Hong Kong Dance Awards, So Low depicts how a man flounders in the face of time. Commissioned by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this concert-length solo premiered in Hong Kong in January 2017. It was re-staged in November of the same year at the City Contemporary Dance Festival.

Open Studio: Contempo Lion Dance (Working Title)

A brand new dance concept turns the lion dance on its head.

It is contemporary dance, yet it is also traditional lion dance. In a provocative challenge to the stereotyped images of traditional and contemporary dance, Contempo Lion Dance re-interprets the core of the traditional culture through contemporary dance body art and vision. It also unfolds the meaning behind the cultural symbols in the lion dancing such as "high pillar jump", "collecting the lucky pack" and "crossing tables" etc. To further explore the “total theatre” nature and possibilities of lion dance, Daniel Yeung has created a cross-media collaboration by incorporating elements like kung fu, parkour and acrobatics.

Premiered in 2016, the original LionDance was commissioned by 8/F Platform, Hong Kong Dance Company. It created a new approach to body and movement training and appreciating dance. It also provided a new performing experience by reinterpreting the Hong Kong traditional lion dancing culture in a contemporary way. In 2017, Yeung further developed the LionDance concept in ContempoLion which was commissioned by ArtisTree the art space in Swire Properties’ Taikoo Place.
