Our English-language Tea House Theatre Student Matinees are specially designed to introduce secondary students with little or no background in Chinese language or culture to Hong Kong’s local form of Chinese opera – Cantonese opera. Each session includes a narrated performance in our Tea House Theatre and a guided tour of the Xiqu Centre.

During the guided tour, students explore the Xiqu Centre facilities, learn about the architectural and design features, and discover fascinating facts about Cantonese opera culture.

The performance, presented by the Xiqu Centre’s Tea House Rising Star Troupe, features romance and martial arts excerpts, as well as musical pieces illustrating different styles. During the show, a narrator guides students through each segment, offering insight into the art form, its history and cultural significance.

All excerpts are performed in Cantonese, with English surtitles and narration to ensure a meaningful and authentic cultural experience for students who do not speak Chinese.

In keeping with the classic tea house atmosphere, students are served tea and dim sum during the performance.*

To support teaching and learning activities in schools, the programme also includes a teacher information pack with information about Cantonese opera and the selected performances.

Applications are welcome from local or international secondary schools.

*The provision of refreshments may be subject to change in line with epidemic prevention measures.
