The Embodied Life: Awareness of Self in Everyday Life and on the Stage

"I was introduced to Russell Delman and his work during my training as a Feldenkrais practitioner and I have found that the work Russell shared with us as well as the Feldenkrais movement lessons he taught has helped my practice as a performer and director immensely. From increased physical awareness and flexibility to greater spacial awareness, from having more choices in how to play a character to solving problems in the rehearsal room to simply standing on stage with presence.

Russell’s The Embodied Life Workshop will be of immense benefit to performers and directors who not only want to be present on stage or in the rehearsal room but also be present in the living moments of their lives.”

─ Sean Curran, Co-Artistic Director of Theatre du Pif

Fulfillment both in our everyday life and as performers requires the same fundamental capacity: to be present in the living moment. Authentic presence cannot be faked. It requires the simultaneous congruence of body, heart, mind and the external environment.

Embodiment is a great ally for this presence. It refers to the integration of mind, body and spirit. The first key is to sense ourselves through our bodies inviting us in the present moment. The second key is to learn to be aware of our thinking and feeling patterns and to distinguish those that are helpful from those that are unhelpful. This sense of being whole in thought and feeling as “embodied beings”, grounded in the present moment, is the doorway to all that we long for as people and performers.

During the 5-day workshop, Russell Delman, the founder of The Embodied Life, will share his approach to human transformation. The workshop will be composed of Embodied Meditation (based on the Zen practice of “just sitting”), Feldenkrais movement lessons and Guided Inquiry awareness practices. Through the workshop, participants will deepen their capacity of wholistic presence, which can develop their true response-ability: the ability to respond to the present moment in new and more fulfilling ways through the workshop.
