The Watcher

"Tim Crouch confirms himself as a uniquely engaged collaborator with his audience’s imagination and thought processes. In many ways, this is nothing like theatre as we usually understand it, and yet in crucial elements this is its very essence."

Financial Times

In his seminal book, The Empty Space, the director Peter Brook described the foundation of theatre as a simple action being witnessed by another. But how does the witness watch? And what do they bring to the act? Education or entertainment? Pleasure or pain?

This 10-day workshop offers an opportunity for theatre practitioners to look closely at the relationship between the audience and the performer. Working alongside the acclaimed UK theatre maker and playwright Tim Crouch, whose work strips theatre down to its constituent parts, questioning what makes a performance and what constitutes the physical space of theatre, and encouraging the audience to understand its role as a co-author, participants will be encouraged to explore ideas of creativity and reception.

Designed for people who have made their own work, or are thinking about making their own work, the workshop encompasses writing, performing and directing, and combines a mixture of practical and theoretical exploration. Participants will make new works during the workshop and present to an invited audience at the end of it. It will be playful, thoughtful and empowering.
