The Legend of the Purple Haiypin

The return of a purple jade hairpin to its owner leads to an intricate love affair between scholar Yik (Yam Kim-fai) and the courtesan Siu-yuk (Pak Suet-sin). Despite the machinations of a high official who plots to have Yik marry his own daughter, the lovers are finally reunited. But their happiness is short-lived... Based on a well-known, frequently revived opera by Ming dynasty librettist Tang Xianzu, and scripted by Tong Tik-sang at the height of his career, this classic film is one of the most celebrated works in the golden age of Cantonese opera. The film’s distinction lies mainly in Lee Tit’s filmic interpretation. His smooth camera work captures the essence of Tong’s exquisite lyrics, as well as the flawless performance of the two stars.

Happy Wedding

In this folktale set in the Warring States period, the union of love between a prince in distress (Yam Kim-fai) and a spoilt princess (Pak Suet-sin) symbolises the sealing of alliances between two states. The pairing of Yam, who traded her usual on-screen persona as an upright scholar for a slick, canny prince in distress, and Pak’s sassy portrayal of the mischievous princess, sends sparks flying in this all-time classic in the Yam-Pak repertoire.
