The Shanghai Yue Opera House was founded in 1995 with Yuan Xuefen as the founding director. Over the years, the group has created and adapted more than 400 classical, historical and contemporary works including The Butterfly Lovers, Romance of the West Chamber, The Dream of the Red Chamber and Xiang Lin’s Wife. Its award-winning productions also include a new adaptation of The Dream of the Red Chamber, The Empresses in the Palace, Stage Sisters, The Family, Mei Long Town, The Separated Spring, Jade Love, Zhao’s Orphan, Beauty Yu and Deep into Autumn. The group has performed to wide acclaim in Japan, France, Thailand, Singapore, the USA, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Zhou Qian
Playwright
Zhou QianPlaywright and lecturer at the Chinese Theatre Department of the Anhui Professional College of Art, Zhou Qian trained at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Zhou has written a variety of stage plays and screenplays, including the Chinese opera productions Drunken Love and Hu Xueyan, the musical Harry’s Magical Castle, the movie Crazy Femme Fatale, and the stage production You’re My Choice.

Zhang LeiZhang Lei is a prominent young director whose credits span several xiqu genres, from Peking opera, Kunqu and Yue opera, to qinqiang, huangmeixi, Cantonese opera, Wu opera and Jiangxi opera. Notable works include Four Dreams in the Camellia Hall, The Search of the Academy (Cantonese opera), Li the Thirteenth (qinqiang), Not Crossing the Line (huangmeixi), Pan Mohua (Kunqu), Woman Warrior (Wu opera), the experimental productions The Postman and The Legend of the White Snake 2.0, and the stage play A Dream of Life and Death.

Xin Yaqin is a National Class Two Performer and a graduate of the Shanghai Theatre Academy with training under Yueju artists such as Wang Wenjuan, Lu Ruiying and Shan Yangping. She specialises in huadan roles (young female), and her repertoire includes A Dream of the Red Mansions, Meng Lijun, Love with a Fairy Carp and Three Glimpses of the Princess. She has won a number of awards including being named among the Ten Best Huadan.

A National Class Two Performer specialising in xiaosheng roles (young male), Wang Qing graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy and trained under Yueju artists Yin Guifang and Zhao Zhigang. Her repertoire includes He Wenxiu, A Pure Spirit, A Dream of the Red Mansions and The Queen of Emperor Wen of Han. She has received a number of awards, including the Shanghai Yueju New Talent Award and the Petit Butterfly Trophy Shanghai Yue Opera Promising Performer Award.

Wang Rousang is a National Class Two Performer specialising in xiaosheng roles (young male). She graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy and trained under Yueju artists such as Fan Ruijuan, Chen Qi and Zhang Ruihong. Her repertoire includes Butterfly Lovers, The Legend of Li Wa, Meng Lijun and Tale of the West Garden. She has been recognised with a number of awards, including the Third China Xiqu Red Plum Golden Flower Award, Ten Best Xiaosheng and the Petit Butterfly Trophy Shanghai Yue Opera Promising Performer Award.
