CARMEN | HONG KONG on 1-2 November 2019 (Friday & Saturday) is cancelled. Please click here for ticketing arrangements. Programme Enquiries: firstname.lastname@example.org
Carmen｜Hong Kong is a multimedia theatrical production that fuses classical opera, video design and modern dance into an immersive experience. The adaptation reimagines Bizet’s iconic opera as a story about a modern Hong Kong woman and her unwavering pursuit of freedom – a universal pursuit that is deeply rooted in the human condition. Rather than being fixed in a specific historical moment, the story is set in an imagined future, a few years ahead of our present.
The look of the production is very contemporary, with a futuristic edge. It fuses elements of Hong Kong’s present styles, architecture and art with homages to iconic aspects of its cultural past to create the imagined future. Highlights of the adaptation include Carmen enmeshed in Triad gangs rather than as a Roma involved in smuggling, and Escamillo as a celebrity jockey rather than a bullfighter.
