Alongside their new performance Convergence, the artists from Hong Kong Dance Company present a free hands-on workshop for young people with an interest in traditional Chinese martial arts and dance.

During the 45-minute workshop, dancers Ho Ho-fei and Liu Wai-yee – participants in HKDC’s recent “Research study on Chinese martial arts and Chinese dance” – provide a brief introduction to the fundamentals of Southern Chinese martial arts, including simple footwork, stances and gestures as well as the essential concepts of energy flow, force, movement and rhythm. They also introduce the technique of zhan zhuang, a form of standing meditation that can be used to generate internal energy, and explore the relationship between Chinese dance and martial arts.

About the Instructors:

Ho Ho-fei

Ho Ho-fei graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2009 with a major in Chinese dance and a minor in choreography. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 2010, and in 2019 was promoted to Senior Dancer. Ho’s recent performance highlights include major roles in A Journey to the Wild West, Red Poppies, Magical Adventures of Baby Polar Bear and the 12 Zodiac Animals, Chinese Hero: A Lone Exile, Dream of the Past: Ancient Chinese Court Dances, Dim Sum Adventures @ Lung Fung Teahouse 2.0, A Sea of Smiling LT Ducks and A Tale of the Southern Sky. In 2013, his work Protect received the gold medal in the pas de deux category at the Hong Kong Bauhinia Cup International Dance Invitation Competition.

Liu Wai-yee

Libby Liu Wai-yee graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2014 with a Bachelors Degree in Dance (major Chinese Dance). She joined the Hong Kong Dance Company in 2016, and serves as an instructor for the HKDC’s Children’s and Youth Troupes. Liu has performed in a number of HKDC productions, including L'Amour Immortel, Chinese Hero: A Lone Exile, Storm Clouds, Kaleidoscope of Dance from Yunnan, Ode to the Silk Road, Waiting Heart, 8/F Platform – Jing and A Tale of the Southern Sky. She was also the ensemble lead in the production Guli, performed at the Achievement Exhibition of the 2016 Taoli Cup National Dancing Education Performance of China.
