Choreographer and Composer Lab 2020: Works-in-Development Showcase
The Box, Freespace , 18.06.2020
From February to June 2020, Freespace presents a new edition of its research and experimentation programme Choreographer and Composer Lab – a collaborative professional platform that brings artists together to generate creative ideas, explore new approaches to composition in music and dance, and develop partnerships.
To share the results of the four-month exchange with a wider audience, this year’s programme also includes a free public works-in-development showcase and sharing session with the participating artists, presenting work produced during the exchange.
This year’s artists include two independent contemporary dance choreographers – Alice Ma Sze-nga and Joseph Lee – and three independent composers with experience across a range of disciplines and genres – Fiona Lee, Karen Yu and Lawrence Lau Hiu-kong – who are working in two groups: Alice Ma Sze-nga with Fiona Lee, and Joseph Lee with Karen Yu and Lawrence Lau Hiu-kong.
The Choreographer and Composer Lab was initiated in 2016, and presented in partnership with Hong Kong Ballet in 2016 and 2018. To date, the programme has inspired a number of successful collaborations, such as Mike Orange and Yuh Egami’s work on Carmen (Hong Kong Ballet) and Olivier Cong and Ricky Hu Song-wei’s work on When You See (Hong Kong Cool, Hong Kong Ballet), which was nominated for Outstanding Choreography at the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Awards.
