Exhibition: Cantonese Opera and Banknote Design
In 2018, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and three note-issuing banks (The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, and Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited) announced the issue of a new series of banknotes in the denominations of $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000. It is the first time that the thematic subjects on the reverse side of the three note-issuing banks’ banknotes are unified for each denomination; the selected thematic subjects are closely related to the people of Hong Kong, for instance the new $100 notes which will enter circulation in mid-2019 adopt Cantonese opera as the common thematic subject. This exhibition reveals how the note-issuing banks have integrated Cantonese opera into banknote design.
