Simple, elegant and practical, Ming dynasty furniture blends natural materials and expert design craft and is considered some of the finest furniture in China.
In this illustrated talk, renowned local Ming furniture expert and collector Dr Yip Shing-yiu offers insight into the artistry of common styles and designs. He also explores structure and texture, the types of wood used, and the elaborate development of Ming mortise and tenon joints.

About Speaker:
Yip Shing-yiu graduated from the Hong Kong University Faculty of Medicine, and is one of Hong Kong’s most renowned collectors of Ming furniture.
After working in the USA, Yip Shing-yiu returned to practice in Hong Kong in 1965. Influenced by his uncle, he became interested in antiques, and in 1975 he inherited his uncle’s collection of ancient jade and calligraphy.
In 1988, Yip Shing-yiu started studying and collecting Ming furniture, acquiring 68 collection in just three years and was one the world’s most prolific collector at that time. His collection previously numbered 200 pieces, and he currently has more than 100.
