New Works Forum: Screendance is an on-going, evolving project that aims to nurture new creations in the art of screendance and provide an opportunity for artistic exchange.

New Works Forum: Screendance, co-presented by West Kowloon Cultural District and City Contemporary Dance Company, opened in July 2015 with 19 invited artists from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, China and Singapore attending a two-week workshop and production programme. Workshops were led by award-winning directors and choreographers Noémie Lafrance (New York/Canada), Sue Healey (Australia), Yuri Ng (Hong Kong) and Maurice Lai (Hong Kong), with local guest speakers, renowned music video director Susie Au, cinematographer Kwan Pun Leung and action director Jack Wong.

For the first week, artists engaged in discussions around the making of screendance from a variety of perspectives and practices. During the second week, ideas were contextualized through production in practice, with each participant offered the assistance of a producer, cameraman, editor, performers, music and mentorship from the workshop leaders to help produce a 3-minute experimental trailer.

The programme concluded with a full-house forum in the agnès b. CINEMA, where Noémie Lafrance and Sue Healey shared their insights on the art form and presented examples of their recent works. Yuri Ng, Maurice Lai and Willy Tsao discussed screendance form and practice, and screenings were held of selected works by participating artists.

With the ongoing support of West Kowloon Cultural District and City Contemporary Dance Company, participating artists have shown their work to international festival presenters and producers in a pitching session and through a number of different international platforms, including Jumping Frames International Dance Video Showcase 2015, Freespace Happening and National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing.

Four outstanding works were selected and commissioned for further development for Jumping Frames 2016/2017: This is a chicken coop by Ho Qi-wo, Er Gao (China); Yellow Alert by Hugh Cho (HK); 1958 Delivery by Elysa Wendi (HK/Singapore); Decadence by Peng Hsiao-yin (Taiwan). While participating artist Remu Iwai was selected for the Malakta Dance Film Lab residency programme in Vaasa, Finland for three weeks in 2015.
