This October, internationally acclaimed choreographer and multidisciplinary artist Hiroaki Umeda – one of the leading figures of the Japanese avant-garde art scene – joins us live from Tokyo with a specially curated online presentation of his work. Devised in response to the 2020 reality of lockdowns, travel restrictions and social distancing, With/out Umeda explores the spectrum of Umeda’s creations in the context of new possibilities for performance in a post-Covid world, and illustrates his uniquely versatile approach to movement and presentation.

The online event includes real-time performance extracts from a new and on-going experimental collaboration with an artist from the world of gaming and Umeda’s solo work Intensional Particle (new adaptation), a screening of the short film Holistic Strata Screen (2011) and a talk by Umeda about his creative process. There is also a live Q&A session with Umeda and local dance artist Daniel Yeung and new media artist Keith Lam.

Umeda’s work presents a swirling universe of pixels, particles and digital sound, that is stabilising and destabilising, both in its demands of the dancer and the audience. Join us and be prepared to be challenged.

About Hiroaki Umeda:
Umeda and his company S20, have transfixed audiences at major festivals and theatres worldwide. Driven by the balance and flow of movement generated by the body reacting to natural forces, his aesthetic choreographic style and signature Kinetic Force Method combine physical, optical, sensory and spatiotemporal elements that break the rules of traditional performance and demonstrate the fragility and isolation of contemporary urban life.

With/out Umeda is presented as part of Cypher – an encounter with dance and movement live and online at Freespace this autumn.
