Overview

Description

By establishing the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Troupe recently, Dr Ho Chan Un-chan also donated a generous fund to Hong Kong Metropolitan University to establish “Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre”, which is dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera teaching, learning and appreciation; while providing English translation and exchange of Cantonese opera libretti and excerpts, on top of academic research to enhance the awareness and appreciation of Cantonese opera among the local young generation and overseas audience. The centre serves to conduct research, promote development and inheritance of the traditional art of Cantonese opera. The University will cooperate with the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Troupe through “Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre” in supporting the advancement of the Cantonese opera art and cultivate fruitful results from Cantonese opera research.

The opening ceremony of “Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre” and the performance entitled Glamour of Cantonese Opera Shines through the Academia are grounded upon refined classical Cantonese opera titles, including the Nanyin performance “Yearning of the Way in Fall” (by Yuen Siu-fai, BBS, BH) and five Cantonese opera excerpts, namely, “Plum-picking Romance” in The Reincarnation of the Red Plum (by Vong Seng-pan and Leung Sum-yee), “Seeing you Off” in Drums along the Battlefield (by Lung Koon-tin, MH and Nam Fung), “Giving up His own Son to Save Zhao’s Orphan” in The Orphan of Zhao (by Yat Dim-hung and Leung Sum-yee), “Mu Guiying Finding a Groom” (by Vong Seng-pan and Chan Kei-ting), “Meeting at the Military Camp” in Unparalleled Heroes Overlord the City of Chu (by Lung Koon-tin, MH, Yuen Siu-fai, BBS, BH, Nam Fung, Leung Sum-yee, Yat Dim-hung and Siu Wing-yee). These performances will incorporate experienced Cantonese opera veterans and fresh performers in a brilliant and sophisticated operatic art form.
