HK Phil x WestK: Erkki-Sven Tüür and Olivier Cong – The Wind with a Voice

Freespace The Box

Overview

Immerse in a musical dialogue between Hong Kong and Estonia with a selection of pieces by two of the places’ most inventive composers

Description

On 30 May, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and West Kowloon Cultural District jointly present a new chamber music experience that takes you to two continents. The experimental concert features pieces by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür and Hong Kong composer Olivier Cong, performed by players from the award-winning orchestra and Cong in The Box – Freespace’s versatile black box theatre.

Inspired by various music genres, such as folk, classical, electronic and rock, the two musicians have both developed unique and innovative styles. One of the most original and significant composers of his generation, Tüür hopes to raise existential questions through his work, and reach the creative energy and emotional depth of the listener. His work is played regularly by orchestras around the world. Meanwhile, Cong enjoys exploring the mysterious and melancholic through his music. He also frequently experiments with different genres and art forms.

For this concert, Cong has curated a selection of Tüür’s classics, pairing them with a few reworked pieces from his upcoming album. The music performance will be complemented by videos shot by the two composers at where they are currently based. Like the wind that blows across Hong Kong and Estonia, the pair hope the performance can speak to the audience and bring about a conversation between the two lands separated by thousands of miles.

Tüür will hold a masterclass on the craft of composition before the concert. Stay tuned to the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s website for registration details.
