Take part in a one-off artist-led gaming experience where the worlds of poetry and video games collide
Description
Join us at the Xiqu Centre and experience a new poetry-inspired version of the indie video game Word Game, specially commissioned for the SerendiCity media arts festival. In an exclusive one-off collaboration, Hong Kong poet and artist Milo Tse joins forces with Taiwan creative studio Team 9 for A Practical Poet, a special edition of their award-winning, vintage-style adventure game.
Word Game is a single-player role-playing game that unfolds in a text-only virtual world where objects, avatars and scenarios are made up of Chinese characters. Navigating through the experience by moving and removing words to create new sentences and meaning, players influence the outcome of their adventures and create complex graphic environments that illustrate the limitless creative possibilities of text.
For A Practical Poet Tse developed and contributed candid works of poetry and prose about her personal experience as an poet. Weaving through a series of simulated real-world obstacles, players assume the role of a poet on a quest of creation and immerse themselves in both the text and Tse’s emotional and creative struggles.
As player times/spaces are limited, please register in advance. Admission is free. Spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.
A playthrough of the original Word Game will also be livestreamed online, with a local game streamer solving puzzles and reacting to viewer commentary. Full details to be announced soon.
Word Game has received multiple indie game awards, including Tencent’s 2021 Games With Borders (GWB) Indie Games Competition.
“Word Game” Special Edition ‘A Practical Poet’ is presented as part of SerendiCity– a media arts festival showcasing new perspectives on art, urban environments, people and technology.
